Sure, we all love using kraut traditionally: stuffed pork chops, grilled brats, or a hot Reuben sandwich. However, you might not know of all the unique ways kraut can be used to enhance flavor and bring extra zest to any meal.
Trust us. Adding kraut to your brownies is not only a conversation piece, but also adds moistness to the batter. The final product is similar to coconut flakes—many may not even realize it’s actually kraut. If you like thick, fudgy brownies that require a tall glass of milk, give kraut brownies a try.
Sauerkraut’s juice is an underused delicacy. It’s had time to soak up tons of flavor, becoming a salty, sour, garlicky brine. These flavors lend well to salad dressing or a savory broth. Use the juice as a vinegar replacement in a mixture of olive oil, lemon juice, salt, and pepper for a quick vinaigrette.
Many people make their own salsa, and everyone’s got their own special recipe. Cooked or raw, kraut makes a unique addition to salsa. It pairs well with spicy flavors, so don’t be afraid to throw in a jalapeño or two. You’ll end up with a juicy, crunchy salsa that may cause you to modify your traditional salsa recipe!
These are just a few nontraditional ways to use kraut. Check out our recipe section for even more ideas—kraut pizza, apple kraut cake, and more. With kraut, the possibilities are endless (and delicious)!
